Maintaining Dental Implants

Posted .

If you are looking to get implants, or even if you have implants, you may have questions about how to maintain them. There are a few things you can do that can help you keep them sturdy.

Brushing and flossing are still be good habits to keep, even though the crowns or bridges the implants support are not natural teeth. These practices can remove plaque that is on and around your implant.

Flossing an implant can involve more effort because you may need to slide the floss into the little gap between the implant and its crown or bridge. However, you can remove the food and plaque building up in that area, which can help you avoid gum disease and other issues.

One thing we highly recommend you not do is smoke when you have implants. Smoking can affect your gum tissue and your jawbone. The jawbone can be weakened, and your gums can be more prone to gum disease, which weakens your gum tissue. Implants are rooted in the jawbone and supported by the gums, so they can lose their sturdiness if either gets weakened. Avoiding or quitting smoking can keep an implant strong.
