Routine Prophies
You won’t get just a “cleaning” from our hygienists during your 1 or 1 ½ hour appointment. They will customize your treatment according to your needs using a cavitron, hand scalers, prophy jet, and/or prophy cup. If needed, they will use a highly effective, custom made topical anesthetic to assure complete comfort. Your periodontal pocket depths are monitored every visit. Every patient gets an intraoral and extraoral cancer exam for early detection…very important with the incidence of this kind of cancer on the rise. Our hygienists also use an intraoral camera to document imperfections like cracks in the teeth or mouth lesions so that they can be followed for changes. It is also used to show you why a procedure is recommended. We maximize the amount of time our hygienists are able to work on your teeth and do education by being able to move you, if needed, to another room for your yearly exam and x-rays.

Periodic Exams
Our Doctors perform an inspection of the teeth and gums and examine x-rays on a yearly basis, usually in conjunction with an appointment with the hygienist. It may be necessary in some instances to perform this service on a more frequent basis.

Sealants
We place sealants on children’s molars and bicuspids as they erupt. A resin material is used to fill in the deep grooves of the molars where decay is most likely to occur. An air abrasion unit is used first to clean out the grooves to be certain that no decay is being trapped under a sealant. The teeth are ideally sealed as soon as they are accessible above the gum: the first four molars around age 6, the second four molars and the bicuspids around age 12. Sealants are expected to last 2 to 5 years at which time the molars may or may not be resealed, depending on the decay rate for that child.
